What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology is a university-qualified allied health profession that uses exercise as medicine.

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is trained to assess your health, understand your medical history and prescribe safe, effective exercise programs that are tailored specifically to your goals and medical conditions.

Unlike a general exercise program, exercise physiology is designed for people who need expert guidance because of injury, illness or chronic disease.

Your Exercise Physiologist works alongside your GP, specialist and other healthcare providers to help you achieve the best possible outcomes.

Who Can Benefit From Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology can help people living with:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2)
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke recovery
  • Cancer rehabilitation
  • Chronic pain
  • Obesity
  • Falls prevention
  • Balance problems
  • Reduced mobility
  • Mental health conditions including anxiety and depression
  • Post-operative rehabilitation

Even if you don't have a diagnosed medical condition, an Exercise Physiologist can help you exercise safely, improve strength, increase mobility and maintain your independence as you age.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Your first consultation includes a comprehensive assessment of your health and movement.

We'll discuss:

  • Your medical history
  • Current symptoms
  • Previous injuries
  • Lifestyle
  • Exercise history
  • Personal goals

We'll then assess your:

  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Functional movement
  • Cardiovascular fitness (where appropriate)

From there we'll create a personalised exercise program designed specifically for you.

As you progress, we'll continue to monitor your results and adjust your program so you keep improving safely.

Exercise Physiology and Medicare

If you have a chronic medical condition, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates through a GP Management Plan (GPMP) and Team Care Arrangements (TCA).

With a referral from your GP, Medicare currently provides rebates for up to five eligible allied health appointments each calendar year. These five visits are shared across eligible allied health services, including Exercise Physiology, physiotherapy, podiatry, dietetics and others—they are not five sessions for each profession.

Your GP will determine whether you meet the eligibility criteria and whether Exercise Physiology is appropriate as part of your care plan.

If you're unsure whether you qualify, speak with your GP or contact our team and we'll happily explain the process.

Exercise Physiology and NDIS

Rushcutters Health is a registered NDIS provider.

Exercise Physiology may be funded through your NDIS plan when it aligns with your goals and supports your functional capacity, independence and overall wellbeing.

Our Exercise Physiologist works with participants living with a wide range of disabilities and neurological conditions, helping improve:

  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Balance

We can work alongside your support coordinator, plan manager and other healthcare professionals to ensure your program meets your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with our Exercise Physiologist.

However, if you'd like to access Medicare rebates, you'll first need a referral from your GP under a GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangements.

Is Exercise Physiology the same as Physiotherapy?

No.

Physiotherapists often focus on diagnosing and treating acute injuries, while Exercise Physiologists specialise in using exercise as long-term treatment and rehabilitation for chronic conditions, injury recovery and improving physical function.

Many people benefit from seeing both professionals as part of their healthcare team.

How many Medicare-funded Exercise Physiology sessions can I receive?

If you're eligible for a GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangements, Medicare contributes to up to five allied health appointments per calendar year, shared across eligible allied health providers. Your GP can advise how many of these visits should be allocated to Exercise Physiology.

Can NDIS participants access Exercise Physiology?

Yes. If Exercise Physiology is included in your NDIS plan or aligns with your approved supports and goals, our team can provide ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
