Teaching your kids Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Oct 27, 2023 | Health

Encouraging healthy habits in children might initially appear daunting, but it is an essential responsibility for coaches and parents to impart valuable knowledge to the younger generation.

Many coaches find themselves at a loss when faced with the question, “What are the best health and fitness practices for my children?” Entering the realm of youth health can be intimidating, especially considering that the majority of available guidance revolves around grooming better young athletes, rather than nurturing lifelong wellness. Broaching the subject of nutrition, particularly with children, demands sensitivity and skill. It falls upon us, as fitness coaches, to steer our clients and their children toward establishing and sustaining a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle from an early age.

In the following blog, we will outline two key principles for parents and coaches to consider when engaging with young individuals, or when advising children on how to approach health and fitness within their own families.

Restful Sleep

Sufficient and quality sleep forms the cornerstone of a child’s overall well-being and development, significantly influencing their cognitive, emotional, and physical growth.

Adequate sleep not only enhances attention and learning but also consolidates memory, providing a strong foundation for academic success and effective problem-solving. It plays a crucial role in maintaining energy balance and metabolic health, while also aiding in hormonal regulation and reducing the risk of childhood obesity and metabolic irregularities.

Sleep greatly impacts mood regulation and emotional resilience, which are essential for fostering healthy social interactions and stress management, ultimately improving overall mood and reducing irritability.

During sleep, the body primarily undergoes physical growth and muscle development, facilitated by the secretion of growth hormone. Sleep also facilitates a child’s daily exploration, learning, and interaction with their environment.

Establishing a consistent sleep routine is pivotal, as it not only promotes a smoother transition to sleep but also contributes to better sleep quality and duration, instilling lifelong healthy sleep patterns.

Make it a priority for children to adhere to a consistent sleep schedule that allows them to go to bed early and obtain the recommended amount of sleep for their age, at a minimum.

Playtime and Physical Activity

Incorporating play and physical activity into a child’s daily life lays the groundwork for fostering a lifelong appreciation for movement, a crucial mindset to instil at an early age. When children develop an affinity for physical activity, it becomes ingrained as a habitual part of their daily routines, seamlessly transitioning into adulthood as an integrated lifestyle practice rather than a structured obligation. This appreciation serves as a precursor to regular physical activity, enhancing overall well-being and quality of life.

The development of physical resilience and adaptability through diverse and enjoyable physical activities empowers children to confront and surmount challenges. This resilience is not only instrumental in fostering a sense of accomplishment but also encourages the pursuit of active and fulfilling lifestyles throughout all stages of life. Such resilience and love for movement serve as protective factors against various health complications, ensuring the maintenance of both mental and physical well-being.

The habits cultivated during the formative years of childhood have a lasting impact in adulthood, influencing cardiovascular health, metabolic function, cognitive abilities, and overall mental well-being.
